In the bright light of an April afternoon in 2017, a dispute between two men on a Rochester street corner escalated into a fatal encounter. Sherod Hurst, a 27-year-old male, was involved in a physical altercation with another man at the intersection of Thurston Road and Flanders Street. The argument took a tragic turn when his assailant introduced a handgun into the conflict. As Hurst attempted to flee the scene, he was shot multiple times in the back and side. The incident, which unfolded in broad daylight, sent shockwaves through the community.
The Rochester Police Department responded quickly to the scene, but the wounds were too severe. Hurst succumbed to his injuries, leaving behind a grieving family and a neighborhood shaken by the sudden violence. Justice for Sherod Hurst would come over a year later. In August 2018, Cleveland St. John, then 35 years old, was convicted of Murder in the 2nd Degree and two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree for the shooting death of Hurst. The prosecution revealed that after shooting Hurst as he ran away, St. John stood over him and fired multiple more rounds at close range. In September 2018, St. John was sentenced for his crimes, facing the prospect of spending decades behind bars.
