Jamilla “Millie” Shanae Smith, a 30-year-old mother of two from Aiken County, South Carolina, was a woman her family and children relied on. Her life was violently cut short after a terrifying encounter on December 2, 2023.
That evening, Jamilla made her second 911 call of the day from her home on Old Jackson Highway. She told the dispatcher that her ex-boyfriend, Daniel Gabriel Harmon, had broken into her house and was chasing her down the road.
The dispatcher could hear Jamilla screaming, saying she was being hurt and did not want to be touched. The phone dropped, but the line remained open for a time before the call ended. It was the last time anyone heard from her.
The next day, December 3, Jamilla’s mother reported her missing. Investigators focused their search on Harmon, noting that just weeks earlier, on November 9, he had allegedly threatened Jamilla with a knife in front of her children. On December 5, authorities found Harmon’s black Dodge Charger parked in North Augusta and took him into custody. He was subsequently charged with murder and kidnapping in December 2023.
The search for Jamilla continued for more than five months. During the investigation, two other men, Bryan Hampton Jr. and Clyde Hendley, were arrested and charged in connection with the murder. On May 10, 2024, investigators were led to a wooded area in the 2100 block of Silver Bluff Road, where they discovered human remains. The remains were later identified as Jamilla Smith.
Daniel Gabriel Harmon pleaded guilty to the charges of murder and kidnapping. He was sentenced to 45 years in prison for murder and 30 years for kidnapping.
