Mary Bennett and her husband, Edward Bennett, were tragically shot to death on April 28, 1946, in front of their young children during a robbery at their grocery store in Aiken County, South Carolina. Edward Bennett, as he lay dying, identified the assailant as "a big negro" who shot and robbed him. This violent crime left the community in shock and fear, prompting an intense investigation by the Aiken County police.
