Mary Bennett, a 25-year-old female grocer in Aiken County, South Carolina, spent the spring of 1946 working alongside her husband, Edward, in the small family store they ran for their community. On the night of April 28, 1946, their ordinary routine shattered when an armed man entered the grocery, turned a place of everyday commerce into a crime scene, and opened fire.
