Esther Sheryl Wood, aged 27, tragically lost her life on September 15, 1997, in Aiken, South Carolina. She was one of the victims in a mass shooting at the R.E. Phelon Company, a lawn mower parts manufacturing factory where she worked. The perpetrator, Hastings Arthur Wise, was a former employee of the factory who had been terminated from his position as a machine operator in July 1997.
