Mary Ann Powlas, a 50-year-old female, died on September 24, 2021, in a tragic incident at her residence in Aiken, South Carolina. The event, which occurred at The Boundary at Silver Bluff Apartments, was determined by authorities to be a murder-suicide.
In the early hours of that Friday, officers from the Aiken Department of Public Safety were dispatched to the apartment complex following reports of gunshots. As law enforcement approached the apartment, they heard a gunshot.
Upon entering the residence, they discovered four deceased individuals.
The victims were identified as Mary Ann Powlas, her 55-year-old husband, John Fitzgerald Seward Sr., and their 27-year-old daughter, Erica Nicole Seward. The investigation identified the shooter as Mary Ann's 19-year-old son, Johnathan Andrew Seward, who also died at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
A fifth person, the couple's 18-year-old daughter, Theresa Seward, was found with severe injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. She was the sole survivor of the incident. The Aiken County Coroner's Office confirmed the identities of the deceased and the nature of the event. The investigation into the motive behind the tragic event was conducted by the Aiken Department of Public Safety.
