A tragic and violent confrontation in the parking lot of an Aiken, South Carolina gas station on January 15, 2024, ended the life of 43-year-old Tiffany Britt. The female victim was fatally shot by her husband, 55-year-old George Britt, in what law enforcement has described as a murder-suicide. The couple, who were residents of Augusta, Georgia, were reportedly involved in a domestic dispute in the moments leading up to the deadly encounter.
The incident unfolded just before 11 a.m.
at the Murphy Express gas station on Richland Avenue West. Officers with the Aiken Department of Public Safety were dispatched to the scene in response to a call about a domestic dispute. As they were arriving, George Britt shot his wife. An off-duty deputy who was nearby had attempted to intervene in the argument but was unable to prevent the shooting.
Tiffany Britt was transported to a local hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead. George Britt died at the scene from what the coroner determined to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Following the incident, the Aiken Department of Public Safety, along with the Aiken County Coroner's Office and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, opened an investigation into the murder-suicide. Due to the involvement of the off-duty deputy who tried to intervene, the state law enforcement agency was called in to investigate that aspect of the event.
In the wake of the tragedy, it was revealed that Tiffany was a manager for Murphy USA, overseeing several stores in Georgia and South Carolina. She was recognized for her professional achievements and was described by those who knew her as a person who loved fiercely and was protective of her loved ones. She was a stepmother to three children. In a social media post made just weeks before the incident, George Britt had expressed his deep affection for his wife, stating he could not imagine his life without her.
