In the quiet, early morning hours of September 24, 2021, a tragedy unfolded within the walls of a Silver Bluff Apartments unit in Aiken, South Carolina, forever changing the lives of the Seward family. Erica Nicole Seward, a 27-year-old woman, was found deceased in her residence, a victim of a horrific act of violence that also claimed the lives of her parents.
That morning, at approximately 1:25 a.m., the Aiken Department of Public Safety was dispatched to the apartment complex
following reports of an active shooter. As officers arrived and cautiously approached the apartment, they heard a final, chilling gunshot from within. What they discovered inside was a scene of immense sorrow and violence. Erica, along with her parents, 55-year-old John Fitzgerald Seward Sr. and 50-year-old Mary Ann Powlas, had been fatally shot. Another of Erica's siblings, Theresa Seward, then 18, was found with severe injuries but alive.
The investigation into the quadruple fatality quickly identified the shooter as Erica's younger brother, 19-year-old Johnathan Andrew Seward. Authorities determined that Johnathan had shot his parents and sisters before turning the gun on himself, dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Another brother, John Jr., was not physically harmed in the incident.

Investigators with the Aiken Department of Public Safety conducted a thorough investigation, which included the analysis of electronic devices found in the home, in an attempt to uncover a motive for Johnathan's violent actions. Despite their efforts, no clear reason for the tragedy could be found. With the perpetrator deceased, the case was considered exceptionally cleared. The loss of Erica Nicole Seward, alongside her parents and brother, left a lasting scar on their surviving family members and the Aiken community.
