In the early morning hours of January 20, 2025, the life of 25-year-old Nyasia Dowling was tragically cut short in a room at the American Hearth Inn on Richland Avenue West in Aiken, South Carolina. Authorities responded to reports of shots fired at the motel around 4:41 a.m. and discovered Ms. Dowling deceased, having sustained at least one gunshot wound.
She was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:15 a.m.
The Aiken County Sheriff's Office immediately launched an investigation into the shooting. The investigation led them to a suspect, and on January 29, 2025, 32-year-old Dante Jamal Breeland of Aiken was arrested. Breeland was subsequently charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. The specifics of what led investigators to Breeland have not been publicly detailed, nor has a motive for the shooting been released. It is also unclear if Breeland and Dowling were acquainted with one another.
Nyasia Dowling was a mother to a young daughter and a graduate of South Aiken High School. Her family remembered her as an extraordinary mother, daughter, and sibling who took great pride in caring for her loved ones. She enjoyed cooking and watching movies with her daughter, and cherished spending time with her family, especially during the holidays. An autopsy was scheduled to be performed in Newberry to officially determine the cause of death.
