In the autumn of 2017, the life of 23-year-old Shaquan McMillan was tragically cut short in Rochester, New York. On the first of October, a violent encounter led to his untimely death near Ontario Beach Park. McMillan was shot in the back while attempting to flee toward Beach Avenue. The single gunshot proved to be fatal, causing catastrophic damage to his jugular and carotid artery.
He ultimately succumbed to his injuries in the middle of the street.
The investigation into the shooting was a collaborative effort by the Rochester Police Department, who pieced together the events that led to the fatal shooting. Their work led to the identification and arrest of a suspect, Darrin Jones Jr., who was 20 years old at the time of his sentencing. The prosecution of the case was handled by the Monroe County District Attorney's Office, which brought the matter before a jury.
Following a trial, Darrin Jones Jr. was convicted of second-degree murder for the death of Shaquan McMillan. In a courtroom proceeding on March 1, 2019, a Monroe County Court Judge sentenced Jones to a term of 25 years to life in the New York State Department of Corrections. The sentencing brought a measure of closure to the family of Shaquan McMillan, though the profound loss of a young life continues to be felt by those who knew him.
