On the evening of April 22, 2018, a knock on a bedroom door in the Melrose Houses on Morris Avenue in the Bronx would tragically alter the course of many lives. Inside the apartment, 25-year-old Orlando Concepcion was visiting with his girlfriend. Hearing the sound, he stepped out of the bedroom to answer the door, a seemingly simple act that would be his last.
Moments later, the sharp report of a gunshot echoed through the apartment.
Concepcion, a Black male, was discovered with a fatal gunshot wound to his head. He was pronounced dead at the scene, his life abruptly ended in a senseless act of violence. The tranquility of that Sunday evening was shattered, replaced by the somber arrival of law enforcement and the beginning of a long and arduous investigation into his murder.
In the days and weeks that followed, the New York Police Department worked to piece together the events that led to Concepcion's death. Despite their efforts, which included appeals to the public for any information that could lead to an arrest, the case grew cold. No suspects were immediately identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. The investigation into who killed Orlando Concepcion remains ongoing, leaving his family and community searching for answers and a measure of justice that has yet to be found.
