On what should have been a joyous occasion, the life of 54-year-old Yvette Johnson was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence. On the warm summer night of July 2, 2018, friends and family had gathered at her home on Grape Street in Buffalo, New York, to celebrate her birthday. The festive atmosphere was shattered shortly after midnight when gunfire erupted, indiscriminately striking guests who were outside the residence.
Yvette Johnson and her 17-month-old grandson, Kyrie Johnson, were both fatally wounded in the barrage of bullets. Two other men were also injured in the shooting but survived their injuries.
The brutal and public nature of the killings sent shockwaves through the Fruit Belt neighborhood and the wider Buffalo community, prompting an intensive investigation by law enforcement. The Erie County District Attorney’s Office would later describe the case as one of the most horrific they had prosecuted, emphasizing the innocence of the victims who were simply enjoying a family celebration. The community mourned the loss of the beloved grandmother and her infant grandson, holding emotional funeral services attended by hundreds at the True Bethel Baptist Church. In the days following the tragedy, police pieced together evidence, and a reward was offered for information leading to an arrest.
The investigation ultimately led to the arrest of Kenyatta Austin, a man from Buffalo. In February 2020, following a bench trial, Erie County Court Judge Kenneth Case found Austin guilty of two counts of intentional murder, two counts of assault, and one count of criminal possession of a weapon. Evidence presented during the trial showed that Austin had fired multiple shots into the group of people gathered outside Johnson's home.
In November 2020, Kenyatta Austin, then 28 years old, was sentenced to the maximum term of 64 years to life in prison for the murders of Yvette Johnson and Kyrie Johnson. The sentencing brought a measure of justice to the grieving family and a community still reeling from the violent loss. It was later revealed that Austin was also serving a concurrent sentence for a separate fatal shooting that occurred in 2017. While one perpetrator was brought to justice, authorities indicated that the investigation remained open, with the FBI assisting in efforts to determine if any other individuals were involved in the crime.
