In the early morning hours of August 19, 2018, a block party in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn, turned tragic, ending the life of 29-year-old Kevin Wood. A construction worker and devoted father of two, Wood was attending the gathering outside the Cooper Park Houses on Debevoise Avenue. The festive atmosphere soured when a friend of Wood's was struck in the head with a bottle.
Ever the helpful friend, Wood lent his car to another individual to drive the injured person to the hospital.
However, upon that person's return, at approximately 4:10 a.m., an unknown assailant shot Wood in the chest at close range. He was rushed to Woodhull Hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Wood, a member of Laborers Local 79, was remembered by his family as a hardworking man who had even contributed to the construction of 1 World Trade Center. He left behind a wife and two young sons.
