In the early evening of September 22, 2019, a burst of violence on Syracuse's North Side tragically cut short the life of 20-year-old Orion Thompson. The young Black man was on Butternut Street, near the intersection of Lodi Street, when he was shot just after 8 p.m. First responders rushed to the scene, and Thompson was quickly transported to a local hospital.
Despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The Syracuse Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation into Thompson's death. Detectives and evidence technicians descended on the neighborhood, with some investigators donning hazmat suits as they meticulously combed the area for clues. Their diligent work over the following weeks pointed them toward a suspect. Law enforcement officials pieced together evidence that ultimately led them to an arrest in connection with the fatal shooting.
Their investigation culminated in the apprehension of 24-year-old Charles Williams, a resident of Syracuse. Williams was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon for his alleged role in Orion Thompson's death.
