In the early morning hours of January 16, 2022, a sense of unease pierced the quiet of Syracuse, New York, as police responded to a call at the Blue Star Market on South Salina Street. Behind the counter of the convenience store, they discovered the body of 32-year-old Raouf Muharram, a clerk who had been shot and killed in what was later described as a 'coldblooded execution.'
This tragic event marked the city's first homicide of the year.
The investigation into Muharram's death quickly gained momentum as detectives canvassed the neighborhood, conducted numerous interviews, and meticulously gathered physical evidence from the scene. Their efforts soon led them to identify a regular customer, Kareem D. Huggins, as the primary suspect. A crucial piece of evidence emerged from an argument that had taken place between Huggins and Muharram just three days prior. The dispute reportedly ended with Huggins ominously telling the victim, 'I'm going to come back and put a bullet in your head, and you're not going to see it coming.'
Surveillance footage from inside and outside the gas station painted a chilling picture of Muharram's final moments. The video showed Huggins initially entering the store but leaving when he found too many people inside. He then repositioned his SUV before re-entering. In a matter of seconds, he walked to the end of the counter and opened fire on the unsuspecting clerk, shooting him point-blank in the chest and then in the head. The graphic footage would later become a pivotal piece of evidence for the prosecution.
Following the shooting, Huggins fled the scene. A swift investigation led law enforcement to track him down 16 hours later at a rest stop in Sandusky, Ohio. He was found in possession of a stolen vehicle and a handgun. Huggins was taken into custody and subsequently extradited back to Syracuse to face charges of second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. In August 2023, a jury, after viewing the convincing and gruesome surveillance video, took very little time to find Kareem Huggins guilty of murder. For his crime, he faced the possibility of a sentence of 42 years to life in prison.
