In the early evening of December 18, 2019, a burst of gunfire shattered the daily rhythm of a Queens neighborhood, leaving 45-year-old Dion Gumby fatally wounded. The male victim was outside a deli on Rockaway Beach Boulevard at approximately 6 p.m. when the violent encounter unfolded. Surveillance footage from the scene captured a brief interaction between Gumby and another man.
As Gumby began to walk away, the other individual drew a handgun and fired multiple shots, striking him in the arm, chest, and abdomen. First responders rushed Gumby to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the brazen shooting quickly led authorities to identify a suspect. Michael Hall, a 33-year-old resident of Far Rockaway, was identified as the alleged shooter. An ongoing investigation culminated in Hall's arrest on January 2, 2020. He was apprehended by the NYPD Warrant Squad at a location in upstate New York. While police did not immediately confirm if Gumby and Hall had known each other prior to the deadly shooting, some investigators believed the dispute may have been related to narcotics.
Following his arrest, Michael Hall faced a six-count indictment that included charges of second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He was arraigned and remanded without bail. The case proceeded through the Queens District Attorney's Office, with Assistant District Attorney Courtney Finnerty leading the prosecution. In a significant development in May 2022, Hall pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter in the first degree. This plea was the result of an agreement with the prosecution. Consequently, Queens Supreme Court Justice Ushir Pandit-Durant sentenced Hall to 21 years in prison for the killing of Dion Gumby.
