In the summer of 2020, a tragedy unfolded in a quiet Vestal, New York neighborhood that claimed the life of a promising young woman. Seventeen-year-old Lauren Ajax, a female student at Vestal High School, died on July 4th in her family’s home on Rano Boulevard. The incident, which was rooted in domestic violence, sent shockwaves through the community.
An argument within the home escalated, culminating in Lauren's stepfather, 62-year-old Jean Guillaume, fatally shooting her.
The violence did not end with Lauren's death. Guillaume also turned the. 22-caliber pistol on Lauren's mother, Dr. Marie Laure Jean-Jacques, who was critically injured but survived the attack. The horrific events were witnessed in part by Lauren's 11-year-old sister, who bravely escaped the home and alerted a neighbor, who then contacted the authorities. When police arrived, they found Lauren deceased at the scene. Her mother and stepfather were discovered with critical gunshot wounds.
Following the shooting, Jean Guillaume was transported to a hospital and placed on life support due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He succumbed to his injuries four days later. With the death of the sole suspect, the criminal case was effectively closed. Investigations into the incident revealed a history of domestic abuse within the family, although police had not been previously called to the residence for such matters. Lauren was remembered as a vibrant and ambitious student who had just finished her junior year and had dreams of becoming a human rights lawyer.
