On a summer evening in the Bronx, a playground filled with the laughter of children turned into a scene of tragedy. It was June 11, 2016, and Jessica White, a 29-year-old mother of three, was watching her children play at the John Adams Houses. In an instant, the joyful sounds were shattered by gunfire, and in a final act of love, Jessica shielded her children from the bullets, sacrificing her own life.
She was struck by a stray bullet and died at the scene, her children bearing witness to the horrific event.
The investigation into the senseless killing revealed a violent feud between rival street gangs. Authorities determined that the shooting was not a random act but a targeted attack gone horribly wrong. The intended targets were members of the Trinitarios gang, but it was Jessica who paid the ultimate price. The investigation, a collaborative effort between the NYPD and the FBI, soon focused on two individuals connected to the 'Dominicans Don't Play' or 'DDP' street gang.
In July 2017, just over a year after Jessica's death, authorities announced the arrest of Stiven Siri-Reynoso, then 24 years old. He was not the gunman but was accused of ordering the shooting in retaliation for an earlier altercation with the Trinitarios. Later that month, a second suspect, 17-year-old Wandy Tejada, was also charged in connection with the murder. Tejada was identified as the individual who fired the fatal shot at the direction of Siri-Reynoso. Both were charged with murder through the use of a firearm in connection with a crime of violence and aiding and abetting the same.
Stiven Siri-Reynoso stood trial and, in July 2018, was convicted by a federal jury of multiple charges, including murder in aid of racketeering and murder through the use of a firearm. The evidence presented at trial detailed his role in the ongoing gang dispute and his direct order to carry out the shooting that led to Jessica White's death. In February 2019, Siri-Reynoso was sentenced to life in prison plus an additional five years, bringing a measure of justice to Jessica's grieving family and community.
