He was suffering from a single gunshot wound to his leg. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Edwards succumbed to his injury and passed away.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting were not immediately clear to law enforcement, who began an investigation into the matter. Initially, the incident was not classified as a homicide. A relative of Edwards provided a possible explanation, stating that the firearm had been in his waistband and accidentally discharged, striking him in the leg and severing a vital artery. Another individual, 23-year-old Oliver Janvier, was also arrested and charged with obstructing governmental administration. These arrests, however, were related to the disturbances at the hospital and not directly to the shooting of Omari Edwards.
