In what detectives investigated as a possible road rage incident, 24-year-old Nelson Caban was shot and killed on the Bruckner Expressway in the Bronx on the night of March 30, 2021. The male victim was driving his Honda Accord southbound on Interstate 95 when a blue sedan pulled up alongside him. An individual inside the sedan opened fire, striking Caban in the face and chest.
The shooting occurred at approximately 10:23 p.m.
in the Pelham Bay section, between the exits for Westchester Avenue/Pelham Parkway and East Tremont Avenue. After the shots were fired, the blue sedan sped away, continuing south on the expressway. Responding to a 911 call, officers from the 45th Precinct found Caban unconscious and unresponsive inside his vehicle, which had come to a stop in the median. Emergency medical services rushed him to Jacobi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
On June 14, 2021, police arrested 18-year-old Luis Rivera of the Bronx in connection with the fatal shooting. He was charged with murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon. The investigation that led to Rivera's arrest was ongoing at the time his arrest was announced.
