In the fall of 1983, a sense of unease settled over the Saline community of Somerset, Kentucky, following the death of an elderly woman. Mamie Mercer, an 80-year-old woman, was found lifeless in the place she should have been safest—her own bed in her home on South Hart Road. It was determined that she had been strangled, a violent end to a long life that left her community in shock and fear.
