In the early moments of an April morning, the life of 17-year-old Jaden Brown was tragically cut short in Brooklyn, New York. Just after midnight on April 23, 2021, police responded to a 911 call reporting a shooting behind the Bayview Houses on East 102nd Street in Canarsie. Upon arrival, officers discovered Jaden with a fatal gunshot wound to his chest.
Paramedics rushed the young man to Brookdale Hospital, but his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting suggested a dispute that escalated to deadly violence. Preliminary findings indicated that Jaden had been involved in an altercation with a group of five unknown males just before the shots were fired. Authorities believe the incident was gang-related. In the wake of his death, the Canarsie community came together to mourn the loss of the teenager and to call for an end to the gun violence that has plagued the city.
For months, the case remained under investigation. Then, in December 2021, a break in the case led to an arrest. Police took 23-year-old Wayne Evans into custody in connection with Jaden's death. He was subsequently charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon. Reports indicated that Evans was a member of the Bloods gang and was already being held on federal drug charges at the time of his arrest for the murder.
