In the early morning hours of July 3, 2018, Argenis Cabrera, a 33-year-old man, was standing with a group of people in front of an apartment building on Union Street in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. At approximately 2:50 a.m., a white van approached the gathering, and individuals inside the vehicle opened fire on the group. Cabrera was struck in the torso by the gunfire. First responders arrived at the scene to find him unconscious and unresponsive.
He was rushed to Kings County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The assailants attempted to flee the scene in the white van but their escape was cut short when they crashed into a parked car just a block away. The suspects then abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot, evading immediate capture. At the time of the incident, it was not clear if Cabrera had been the intended target of the shooting. The New York Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide, but for years, no arrests were made in the case.
Nearly five years after the fatal shooting, a breakthrough in the investigation led to an arrest. On May 2, 2023, the NYPD apprehended Marc Jean, then 35 years old, of Prospect Lefferts Gardens. Jean was accused of being the individual who shot Argenis Cabrera. He was subsequently charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the 2018 drive-by shooting that claimed Cabrera's life.
