A 45-year-old male, Richard Henderson, died on a Brooklyn subway train after being shot on Sunday, January 14, 2024, while attempting to act as a peacemaker during a heated dispute. The incident occurred at approximately 8:15 p.m. on a Manhattan-bound 3 train. Henderson, a father of three and a grandfather of two, was on his way home after watching a football game with friends.
The conflict reportedly began when one passenger confronted another about playing loud music.
Henderson chose to intervene to de-escalate the argument. In the course of his intervention, the individual who had been playing the music allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot Henderson in the back and shoulder. It remains unclear whether the gunman intended to shoot Henderson or the other individual involved in the dispute. After the shooting, the gunman fled the scene and, according to reports from early 2024, has not been apprehended.
Emergency medical services transported Henderson to NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County, where he was pronounced dead. The New York City Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide and subsequently released surveillance photos of the man believed to be responsible for the shooting. The suspect was described as a man with dreadlocks, last seen wearing a black jacket and hoodie.
As of March 2024, there had been no arrests in the case, and the investigation was ongoing, with a $10,000 reward offered for information leading to the killer. Richard Henderson was widely mourned by his family and the community he served as a beloved school crossing guard. His wife of nearly two decades described him as someone who always stood up for the vulnerable, stating, 'He died a hero. He died doing what he did — taking up for the weak.'
