On the evening of April 27, 2024, a burst of violence shattered the night in the East Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn, claiming the life of Daequan Buckley, a 24-year-old Black / African American man. Buckley was sitting in the driver's seat of a BMW at the intersection of 54th Street and Church Avenue when a passenger inside the car with him opened fire. The shooter fired multiple times, striking Buckley in the abdomen before calmly exiting the vehicle and walking away from the scene.
The incident occurred at approximately 8:43 p.m. Emergency services were quickly dispatched, and they found Buckley gravely wounded. He was rushed to Brookdale Hospital Medical Center, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting led police to take two individuals of interest into custody. However, the initial promise of a swift resolution to the case faded. One of the individuals, a 15-year-old, was found to be in possession of a gun and was charged accordingly, but authorities determined he was not connected to Buckley's murder. The other person of interest was subsequently released. To date, no one has been formally charged with the killing, and the investigation remains ongoing, leaving a void of justice for a life cut short. The New York Police Department has appealed to the public for any information that might lead to an arrest, but the gunman who took a father's life remains at large.
Family and friends remember Daequan Buckley as a loving father to his 4-year-old child and a man with a promising talent for technology. He was known for his ability to expertly take apart and reassemble computers. Those who knew him recalled a lovable and intelligent young man who was deeply connected to his family, particularly his half-sister, who acted as a mother figure to him. His sudden and violent death left his loved ones grappling with the senseless loss of a man who was just beginning to build his life and who had so much more to offer. The community is left to mourn another young life lost to gun violence, while the search for the person responsible continues.
