On a Tuesday morning in Rochester, New York, the sound of gunfire shattered the quiet of Cameron Street. It was May 3, 2021, and 26-year-old Jaquan Hill, a male resident of the city, became the victim of a fatal shooting. Responding to the sound of gunshots they had heard at approximately 9:45 a.m., probation officers working in the neighborhood discovered Mr. Hill's body.
Investigators believe the person responsible for the shooting fled the scene on foot.
The Rochester Police Department began an investigation into the city's 22nd homicide of that year. Within days, an arrest was made in connection with Jaquan Hill's death. A 40-year-old Rochester man, Delon McNeil, was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder. The motive for the shooting was reported to be a dispute over McNeil's vehicle.
In March of 2022, Delon McNeil appeared in court and pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of first-degree manslaughter. By admitting to the crime, McNeil accepted responsibility for the death of Jaquan Hill. Following his guilty plea, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison for his role in the fatal shooting. He was formally sentenced on April 26, 2022.
