On a festive July 4th evening in Roosevelt, New York, a block party on Hudson Avenue turned into a scene of chaos and violence, resulting in the death of 27-year-old Tavon Greenhill of Hempstead. The celebration, attended by 75 to 100 people and featuring children's bounce houses, a DJ, and street vendors, was shattered at approximately 7:30 p.m. when gunfire erupted.
The shooting stemmed from a dispute between two groups that had reportedly begun two weeks prior.
During the altercation, multiple shots were fired, striking three individuals. Tavon Greenhill was fatally wounded by a gunshot to the back of his head and was pronounced dead at the scene. A 31-year-old woman from Uniondale and a 21-year-old man from Hempstead were also injured in the shooting and were transported to local hospitals in stable condition. The sudden violence sent attendees, including children, scrambling for safety, leaving behind a scene of disarray.
An investigation into the shooting led to the arrests of two men. In late July, police apprehended 34-year-old Michael Wright of Roosevelt. He was charged with second-degree murder, two counts of second-degree attempted murder, and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Authorities alleged that Wright, who was on parole for prior weapon convictions, opened fire during the dispute.
In early August, a second suspect, 29-year-old Lawrence Sims of Hewlett, was arrested in connection with the incident. Sims faced charges of second-degree attempted murder, criminal use of a firearm, and criminal possession of a weapon. Prosecutors stated that Sims had fired a gun multiple times in Wright's direction, though his shots did not strike anyone. Following their arrests, both men were indicted and faced legal proceedings. Wright was jailed without bail, while Sims was released on bail. Wright pleaded not guilty to the charges.
