In the early moments of a Sunday morning in June 2019, a dispute on a Roosevelt, New York street escalated into gunfire, ending the life of 30-year-old Shamel Williams. A Black man from Jamaica, Queens, Williams was standing with two other men on West Fulton Avenue just after midnight on June 9th when a car approached them. An argument broke out between the men on the street and at least one person inside the vehicle.
The verbal confrontation quickly turned deadly as someone in the car
produced a firearm and opened fire on the three men. Williams was struck in the chest and rushed to a nearby hospital, but the injury proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead at 12:32 a.m. The two other victims, aged 21 and 26, were also wounded in the shooting but were reported to be in stable condition.
Nassau County Police Department detectives launched a homicide investigation, with the assistance of ShotSpotter technology that detected the gunshots. In the days following the shooting, authorities identified Shamel Williams as the deceased but had not made any arrests. The suspect or suspects remained unknown and at large.
Despite appeals to the public for information and the active investigation, there have been no subsequent announcements of arrests, charges, or convictions in the years following the death of Shamel Williams. The case, like many others, highlights the challenges of solving gun violence and bringing perpetrators to justice. The community was left to mourn the loss of a man whose life was abruptly cut short in a burst of violence on a quiet residential street.
