On a summer evening in Queens, New York, a young man's life was abruptly cut short in a burst of gunfire. Twenty-four-year-old Dejuan Brown was sitting in his Nissan Maxima at the intersection of 200th Street and 111th Avenue in the Hollis neighborhood on Sunday, July 11, 2021. At approximately 8:15 p.m., a black SUV, identified in some reports as a Jeep, pulled up alongside his vehicle.
From the passenger side of the SUV, an individual opened fire on Brown's car, striking him multiple
times. The assailant's vehicle then quickly fled the scene, heading southbound on 200th Street. The sudden violence left Brown gravely wounded in his car, which slowly rolled down the street after the shooting.
Officers from the 113th Precinct responded to a 911 call about the shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered the wounded Dejuan Brown. Emergency medical services were dispatched to the scene and transported him to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Police recovered nine 9mm shell casings and one fired bullet from the scene of the crime. In the immediate aftermath, authorities released video footage of the incident in the hopes of identifying the shooter. Law enforcement sources indicated that the investigation was exploring the possibility of the homicide being gang-related, noting that Brown had previous arrests. As of the initial reports, no arrests had been made in connection with the fatal drive-by shooting, and the suspect remained at large.
