In the early morning hours of August 27, 2021, a burst of gunfire shattered the late-summer quiet in the Inwood neighborhood of Manhattan. When the chaos subsided, 27-year-old Stephen Turner lay grievously wounded, a single gunshot to his chest proving to be fatal. The incident, which unfolded near the intersection of 10th Avenue and West 211th Street, also left another 27-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his hand.
Emergency services were summoned to the scene at approximately 1:50 a.m. Responders rushed Turner to the NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Pavilion Hospital, but his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced deceased. The second victim was also transported to the same hospital and was listed in stable condition.
The investigation into the shooting continued for several months. Then, on November 19, 2021, the New York Police Department announced an arrest in the case. Malik Brown, a 26-year-old resident of the Bronx, was taken into custody. He was subsequently charged with murder, attempted murder, and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the shooting that claimed Stephen Turner's life and injured another.
