A dispute that began at a baby shower in the Bronx tragically escalated, leading to the death of 24-year-old Arnold Oliver of Peekskill, New York, on the night of February 12, 2022. The altercation spilled out onto the street near East 198th Street and Webster Avenue in the Fordham Manor neighborhood.
The conflict intensified, and Arnold Oliver reportedly drew a firearm and shot 28-year-old Jamal Smith.
In the chaotic moments that followed, Oliver was not only stabbed multiple times in the head and neck by an unidentified individual, but he was also allegedly shot by Jamal Smith's brother, Wayne Smith. Wayne Smith, 28, is said to have taken Oliver's gun and shot him. Police arrived to find Wayne Smith still kicking Oliver as he lay on the ground. Both Arnold Oliver and Jamal Smith were transported to St. Barnabas Hospital, where they were both pronounced dead.
In the aftermath of the violent encounter, Wayne Smith was arrested at the scene and later indicted on multiple felony charges, including second-degree murder, first-degree gang assault, and criminal possession of a weapon. A second suspect, 26-year-old Nathaniel Sewell of Mount Vernon, was arrested in late March 2022. Sewell faces charges of murder, manslaughter, gang assault, and criminal possession of a weapon. The investigation has been aided by video surveillance of the incident.
