In the early morning hours of June 20, 2022, the life of 21-year-old Darius Lee, a promising male college basketball star, was tragically cut short in his hometown of Harlem, New York. Lee was home for the summer from Houston Baptist University, where he was a standout player and had recently been named the school's Male Student-Athlete of the Year. He was on track to graduate with a degree in sports management that December.
That night, Lee attended a large outdoor gathering, a Father's Day cookout hosted by a local rapper near the Harlem River Park at East 139th Street and Fifth Avenue. Shortly after midnight, a dispute broke out, and a barrage of gunfire erupted, sending the crowd scattering. When the chaos subsided, nine people, including seven men and two women, had been shot. Lee was struck in the chest and rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He was the sole fatality of the mass shooting, an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire.
The New York City Police Department responded to the scene and recovered a firearm, but the shooter or shooters had fled. Despite an ongoing investigation and a $10,000 reward being offered for information leading to an arrest and indictment, no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in the case.
