In the winter of 2022, a fatal encounter unfolded in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, claiming the life of 44-year-old Anthony Holley. On the evening of November 27th, officers responded to a 911 call at the Fulton Houses, a public housing development on West 17th Street. There, they discovered Holley unconscious with a gunshot wound to his head.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into Holley's death led police to 34-year-old Osvaldo Marrero. The events leading to the shooting reportedly began with an altercation. Holley, who was at a deli a half block away, approached Marrero. An argument ensued, during which Holley allegedly struck Marrero in the head with his firearm. After a brief chase, Holley turned and began to walk away. It was at this moment that Marrero, from a distance of about 30 feet, fired a single shot that struck Holley in the head.
Less than a month after the shooting, on December 20, 2022, authorities located and arrested Marrero at a friend's apartment in Harlem. He was subsequently charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon. The motive for the initial confrontation remained unclear. Holley was remembered by his sister as a loving and helpful person.
In a significant development in the case, Osvaldo Marrero pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the first degree and criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree in June 2024. As part of a plea agreement, he is expected to receive a sentence of 16 years in state prison, to be followed by five years of post-release supervision. His sentencing was scheduled for August 1, 2024.
