On a summer morning in Laurel, Maryland, the life of a dedicated police officer was tragically cut short. Steven Francis Gaughan, a 41-year-old male corporal with the Prince George's County Police Department, was fatally shot on June 21, 2005. A 15-year veteran of the force, he was part of a special assignment team investigating a series of vehicle thefts when the fatal encounter unfolded. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of sergeant.
