In a tragic turn of events on a December afternoon in 2016, 20-year-old Kaiyon Stanfield, a male resident of Columbia, Maryland, was fatally shot in what police described as a drug-related incident in Laurel. The shooting occurred on December 18 in the 9400 block of Woodsong Court, where Stanfield and his 21-year-old cousin, Khalil Stanfield, had arranged to sell a quarter-pound of marijuana.
The cousins had driven a rental car to the location and were met by two buyers who got into the
back seat. After a discussion about the price and sampling the marijuana, the situation escalated violently. The first shot struck Kaiyon in the head, followed by two more to his neck and back. As Khalil fled the vehicle, he was also shot in the neck and back but managed to find refuge at a nearby home. Residents who heard the gunshots called the Howard County Police. Emergency responders found Kaiyon in the front passenger seat of the car, still breathing but suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to Shock Trauma in Baltimore, where he succumbed to his injuries five days later. Khalil was also taken to the hospital and was eventually treated and released.
The investigation into the double shooting led to the identification and arrest of two suspects: Davon Philip Jones and Derrick Charles Johnson. Khalil Stanfield identified Jones as one of the individuals in the back seat, and later identified Johnson from a photo array. Home security footage from a nearby residence captured the rental car arriving with four people inside and later showed three individuals, including the two from the back seat, fleeing the scene.
In November 2017, a jury convicted Davon Philip Jones on all charges, including the first-degree murder of Kaiyon Stanfield and the attempted first-degree murder of Khalil Stanfield. He was also found guilty of various conspiracy, robbery, and firearms charges. Derrick Charles Johnson was found guilty of first-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in February 2018, though he was found not guilty of shooting Khalil and of multiple armed robbery charges. Johnson was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder, with an additional consecutive sentence for the handgun offense. The court described the fatal shooting of Kaiyon Stanfield as a 'cold-blooded, calculated 'execution.''
