Hoon-Seong No, a 32-year-old Asian male, was working at Fort Washington Liquors in Fort Washington, Maryland, on the afternoon of January 27, 2007. At approximately 3:30 p.m., two masked robbers entered the store, brandished firearms, and demanded money. During the course of the robbery, a struggle ensued, and Hoon-Seong No was fatally shot. Another employee was also shot and seriously wounded during the incident.
The assailants fled the scene after taking money from the store.
The investigation into the murder led police to identify two suspects. On February 10, 2007, approximately two weeks after the shooting, 24-year-old Zachary Anthony Johnson of White Plains, Maryland, and 26-year-old Joseph Caulfield of Fort Washington, Maryland, were apprehended in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Both men were charged with first-degree murder and armed robbery in connection with the death of Hoon-Seong No.
The legal proceedings that followed, however, did not result in a conviction for the murder. On April 3, 2008, Joseph Caulfield was found not guilty of the charges against him. Several months later, in October 2008, the prosecution dropped all charges against the second suspect, Zachary Anthony Johnson. As a result, no one was ultimately held legally responsible for the death of Hoon-Seong No. The case remains a stark and unresolved tragedy for his family and the community.
