In the early afternoon of May 4, 2022, 34-year-old Benjamin Ampong was fatally shot on Corning Avenue in Fort Washington, Maryland. The male victim was discovered by Prince George's County Police officers at approximately 1:00 p.m. in the 2500 block of the street, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Immediately following the shooting, a description of the suspect's vehicle was broadcast to law enforcement.
An officer observed a car matching the description leaving the area and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The driver refused to pull over, initiating a brief chase. The pursuit ended when the suspect vehicle crashed in the 4800 block of Wheeler Road. Two individuals exited the car and fled on foot.
One of the occupants, a 16-year-old male from Washington, D.C., was apprehended by officers in a nearby area. He has been charged as an adult with first-degree murder and other related offenses. The second individual managed to escape, and the search for him continues.
In the course of the investigation, a second man, 31-year-old Anthony Shaw of Washington, D.C., was identified as a potential suspect and an arrest warrant was issued. He was taken into custody, but further investigation and new evidence provided by his family proved he was not in the vicinity of the murder at the time it occurred. Consequently, the charges against Mr. Shaw were dropped, and he was released from custody. The investigation to identify and apprehend the second gunman remains active.
