In the winter of 2014, the life of 52-year-old Kimberly Ann Leto, a bartender in Baltimore, Maryland, was tragically cut short in a brutal act of violence that shook her community. On the morning of January 31, 2014, she was discovered in her home on South Elwood Street, located in the Highlandtown neighborhood near Patterson Park. Leto was found unresponsive on her living room floor, having suffered massive trauma.
The scene was grim, with a large kitchen knife found near her body, indicating a violent struggle had taken place.
The investigation into her death quickly revealed that she had been the victim of a robbery that turned fatal. Police determined that two teenagers had broken into her home with the intention of burglarizing it. When Leto, who had been sleeping on her couch, awoke and confronted the intruders, they attacked her, stabbing her multiple times. The senseless violence of the act for what was believed to be the theft of change, electronics, and other small personal items left the community in shock and mourning for the well-loved bartender.
Within days of the discovery of Kimberly Leto's body, Baltimore police arrested two suspects, 16-year-old Alonzo Gorham-Ramos and 14-year-old Allen Pinkney. The breakthrough in the case came from DNA evidence, as Leto's blood was found on Gorham-Ramos's pants. Faced with the evidence against him, Gorham-Ramos confessed to his and Pinkney's involvement in the robbery and murder. Both teenagers were charged as adults with first-degree murder and other offenses.
In the legal proceedings that followed, both Alonzo Gorham-Ramos and Allen Pinkney pleaded guilty to the murder of Kimberly Leto. In May of 2016, they were each sentenced to life in prison with all but 45 years suspended, to be followed by five years of probation. During the sentencing, the judge underscored the horrific nature of the crime and the profound and lasting impact it had on Leto's family and friends. The case highlighted the tragic consequences of youth violence and brought a measure of justice for the untimely death of Kimberly Leto.
