In the summer of 2014, the city of Baltimore was grappling with a surge in violence. It was against this tense backdrop that the life of 38-year-old Tyree Woodson, an African-American man, came to a sudden and controversial end. On August 5th, members of the Baltimore Police Department's Warrant Apprehension Task Force took Woodson into custody and transported him to the Southwestern District Police Station. Not long after his arrival, a single gunshot echoed from a bathroom within the station. When officers entered, they found Tyree Woodson dead from a gunshot wound to the head.
The official narrative from the Baltimore Police Department was swift and seemingly straightforward: Woodson had managed to smuggle a. 40-caliber Glock pistol into the station, concealed within a medical boot he was wearing for a recent injury. According to police, he then used the weapon to take his own life in the bathroom. This version of events, however, was immediately met with skepticism and disbelief by Woodson's family, including his mother, Verdessa McDougald, and his fiancée, Tahesha White. They questioned how a man in police custody, who they say was searched, could have entered a secure police station armed. They believed that officers at the Southwestern District station were responsible for his death.
The investigation into Woodson's death did little to quell the family's suspicions. The police, the coroner, and the State's Attorney's Office all ultimately concluded that Woodson's death was a suicide, and the case was officially closed. No charges were ever brought against any of the officers involved in his arrest or who were present at the station. Seven months after his death, a detective visited Woodson's mother to inform her of the official ruling of suicide.
