In the late evening hours of February 13, 2023, a burst of gunfire shattered the night in a Baltimore neighborhood, tragically cutting short the life of 19-year-old Tyree Bell. A Black male, Bell was discovered by Baltimore Police Department officers who had responded to a ShotSpotter alert at approximately 10:38 p.m. in the 1200 block of North Potomac Street.
He was suffering from gunshot wounds and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into Bell's death led police to a convenience store at the intersection of Preston and Potomac Streets, where surveillance footage captured the chilling moments leading up to the shooting. Video from inside the One Stop Grocery and a nearby warehouse showed Bell arriving at the store in a black car with three female acquaintances. Shortly after, three men, described as assailants, were seen on video approaching the car and exchanging words with the passengers, who then quickly drove off. As Bell exited the convenience store, one of the assailants fatally shot him. All three attackers fled the scene on foot. According to the defense attorney for a later suspect, one of the three assailants was killed shortly after the incident.
In the months that followed, homicide detectives worked to identify those responsible for Tyree Bell's murder. On May 10, 2023, the Baltimore Police Department released a video showing four persons of interest and offered an $8,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. The investigation eventually led to the arrest of Derrien Gamble, who was 21 at the time of the events and later 22 during his trial. Gamble was apprehended at a residence while police were executing a search and seizure warrant for a separate attempted murder case. Authorities recovered a handgun and a cell phone from the scene.
Derrien Gamble was charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, and firearm-related offenses in connection with Tyree Bell's death. During the trial, the prosecution presented a range of evidence, including the surveillance footage that allegedly showed Gamble as one of the three men outside the grocery store. They also presented cell phone location data indicating Gamble's phone was in the area of the convenience store before and after the shooting. Furthermore, the prosecution claimed that fingerprints found on the firearm linked to the murder were a close match to Gamble's and presented a video in which he allegedly discussed the murder hours after it occurred. DNA evidence found on the handgun was a mix from at least two individuals; Bell was excluded as a contributor, while the results for Gamble were inconclusive. The defense attorney argued that the prosecution had not proven Gamble's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt and questioned the thoroughness of the investigation, particularly concerning the role of the three women who were with Bell.
