In a tragic turn of events on an autumn afternoon, Mitchell White, a 39-year-old male, lost his life in Bowie, Maryland, while attempting to be a peacemaker. The incident unfolded in the parking lot of the Belair Swim & Racquet Club, adjacent to Bowie High School, on September 30, 2014. White had arrived to pick up his son when he witnessed the teenager involved in a fight with another young man.
As he stepped in to de-escalate the altercation, another individual present at the scene introduced a firearm into the conflict.
The man with the gun, later identified as 19-year-old Deon Eugene Warren of Upper Marlboro, fired a shot that struck White. Emergency services were called to the chaotic scene on Midwood Lane around 5:35 p.m., but their efforts were in vain as White was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound in the parking lot. The preliminary investigation suggested that the fatal shooting stemmed from the fight White was trying to stop. Authorities noted that there may have been a prior altercation between White's son and the other teen involved in the fight.
Following the shooting, an investigation was launched, and eyewitness accounts quickly led police to identify Deon Warren as the primary suspect. An arrest warrant for first-degree murder was issued for Warren. He was apprehended by the Prince George's County Police Department's fugitive squad at a motel in Anne Arundel County on the night of October 1, 2014.
Deon Warren was subsequently charged with the murder of Mitchell White. During legal proceedings, video of the incident showed Warren running toward the fight and brandishing a handgun before a shot was heard. In November 2015, Warren was sentenced to 30 years in prison for his role in the death of Mitchell White, a father of two who was killed while trying to protect his son and resolve a conflict peacefully.
