In a tragic turn of events on a Wednesday afternoon, Lydell Walter Wood, a 29-year-old man, was fatally shot in the Waldorf neighborhood where he lived. The incident, which occurred on January 6, 2016, was not a random act of violence, but rather the grim culmination of a dispute in which Wood was an innocent bystander. Earlier that day, an acquaintance of Wood had been involved in a confrontation with a man named Miguel Angel Santana.
During that initial altercation, Wood's acquaintance brandished a handgun and shot at Santana, who managed to escape unharmed.
Seeking retaliation, Santana enlisted the help of Antonio Ka-Juan Owens. Together with a third man, Rashaad Brawner, they returned to the neighborhood in Brawner's vehicle, searching for the group of men who had been present during the earlier shooting. When they spotted Wood, Santana and Owens exited the car, both armed with guns. Wood, realizing the danger, turned and ran in an attempt to find safety in a nearby house. Rashaad Brawner was also identified as a co-defendant in the case.
