In September 2016, the quiet community of Pocomoke City, Maryland, was unsettled by a grim discovery that unfolded within a family home. Karen E. Purnell, a 53-year-old woman, was found deceased in her residence on Groton Road. The events that led to this tragic finding began when a concerned friend, unable to reach Karen for some time, went to her home.
Upon arriving, the friend was met with no answer and a deeply disturbing odor emanating from the house, prompting a call to the Worcester County Sheriff's Department for a welfare check.
When deputies arrived, they found the home secured from the outside with no signs of a break-in. Their attempts to make contact with anyone inside were initially met with silence. As they persisted, they heard a male voice from within the residence. The man, later identified as Karen's 46-year-old brother, Marvin Desmond Purnell, refused to open the door. For about an hour, law enforcement attempted to communicate with him via cellphone and loudspeaker to no avail. The situation escalated when deputies deployed a CS gas canister into the home in an effort to compel any occupants to exit. This action inadvertently ignited a fire inside the residence.
Following the fire being extinguished by the Pocomoke Fire Department, authorities entered the home and made a series of somber discoveries. They first located the body of Marvin Desmond Purnell, who had a rifle underneath him and what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Shortly thereafter, they found the decomposing bodies of Karen Purnell and her 78-year-old father, Marvin Wilmer Purnell, on the kitchen floor.
The subsequent investigation by the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit determined that Karen Purnell's death was a homicide. An autopsy revealed she had been shot once in the back of the head and had also sustained multiple stab wounds. Her father, Marvin Wilmer Purnell, was also a victim of homicide, having been shot twice in the face. The investigation concluded that Marvin Desmond Purnell was the sole suspect in the deaths of his sister and father. After killing them, he took his own life. At the time, investigators could not determine a motive for the double murder-suicide that left a family and a community in mourning. Neighbors remembered the Purnells as good, church-going people, making the violent end to their lives all the more shocking and incomprehensible.
