Not long after, the remains of Mildred and her four-year-old daughter Susan were found in a wooded area in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. The investigation into the heinous crime led authorities to a jazz musician named Melvin Davis Rees Jr. Evidence connected Rees to the abduction and murders, painting a picture of a sadistic predator. He was subsequently arrested and charged with the kidnapping and murder of Mildred and Susan Jackson. During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence that Rees had sexually assaulted and killed Mildred, and had also murdered her young daughter to eliminate any witnesses to his horrific crimes.
Melvin Davis Rees Jr. was found guilty on multiple counts, including kidnapping and murder.
