Jasmine Pierce-Morris, a 19-year-old female, was found dead on the morning of June 12, 2018, in a tragic discovery that cut short a promising young life. A woman walking her dog in the 2400 block of Westfield Avenue in Baltimore, Maryland, stumbled upon the grim scene at approximately 10:30 a.m. Pierce-Morris's body was located on the bleachers of the practice football field at Reginald F. Lewis High School, positioned face down with her hands bound behind her back with rope.
The subsequent autopsy would reveal the brutal nature of her death, indicating she had suffered from multiple skull fractures, numerous stab wounds, and signs of strangulation.
The investigation into her death quickly focused on her ex-boyfriend, Christopher Rather. At the scene of the crime, detectives discovered a junior prom photograph of the victim with a male, later identified as Rather. The investigation further revealed that Pierce-Morris had made plans to meet Rather at that location the night before her body was found. When questioned by police, Rather provided an alibi for the evening of June 11, 2018. However, his alibi witness later confessed to authorities that he had not been with Rather on the night of the murder and that Rather had instructed him to lie to the police.
Forensic evidence played a crucial role in connecting Rather to the crime. DNA belonging to the defendant was found on the rope used to bind the victim. A mixture of both the defendant's and the victim's DNA was also discovered on Rather's shoe at the time of his arrest. In July 2019, a jury found Christopher Rather guilty of second-degree murder and use of a deadly weapon with intent to injure. In October of that same year, he was sentenced to 43 years in prison.
However, the legal proceedings did not end there. In December 2020, the Appellate Court of Maryland reversed the original conviction, citing issues with the evidence and jury instructions provided during the trial. The case was remanded for a new trial. As of late 2023, the retrial for Christopher Rather in connection with the death of Jasmine Pierce-Morris was in the process of being scheduled.
