In the early morning hours of April 19, 2021, a tragic event unfolded on the 700 block of Woodbourne Avenue in Baltimore, Maryland, forever altering the lives of a local family. Nikea Jackson, a 27-year-old woman, was found with gunshot wounds around 4:30 a.m.. Despite being rushed to Sinai Hospital, she succumbed to her injuries shortly after her arrival.
The investigation into her death quickly pointed to one individual, 44-year-old Daya Jones.
Before she passed away, Jackson was able to provide some information to officers which helped them identify Jones as the suspect. Witnesses also reported seeing Jones with Jackson that morning. Surveillance footage from the area captured a black Honda SUV, which was owned by Jackson but frequently driven by Jones, near the scene of the incident. A loud bang, believed to be the fatal gunshot, was also recorded on the footage. Jones was apprehended by a warrant task force on April 23, 2021, in the 7900 block of Pulaski Highway. During questioning by homicide detectives, he gave a full confession.
The case against Daya Jones proceeded to trial, where conflicting narratives of the events leading to Jackson's death were presented. The prosecution argued that the couple was having an argument over Jackson's daughter, which escalated to Jones shooting her in her left side. In contrast, the defense claimed the shooting was a tragic accident. According to the defense, Jones and Jackson had been at a nightclub and had driven to her home. His attorney stated that as Jones was placing a handgun in the driver's side door, it unintentionally discharged, striking Jackson. The defense contended that there was no evidence of a fight or struggle between the two.
Ultimately, the jury convicted Daya Jones of first-degree murder. In July 2023, he was sentenced to life in prison, with an additional 20 years for firearm use in a felony violent crime, three years for having a handgun in his vehicle, and 15 years for firearm possession with a felony conviction, with these sentences to be served consecutively. During the sentencing, many of Jackson's family members gave emotional statements about their loss. One of her aunts described the act as one of 'evilness,' while her sister expressed that the incident 'left a stain in my family that can never be washed away.' Jones also spoke, apologizing for his actions and calling the shooting a 'tragic accident.' The case also brought to light a history of domestic violence between Jackson and Jones.
