Shawnika Dionne Deniton, 31, was found dead inside her home in the 5000 block of Belair Road in Northeast Baltimore on Wednesday, May 24, 2023. The Baltimore Sun's homicide database records the cause of her death as blunt force injuries. The Baltimore Police Department investigated, and the Sun's database lists her death as a homicide.

According to a police account reported by the Baltimore Witness, officers went to a residence in the 5000 block of Belair Road at about 5:40 p.m. that Wednesday "to investigate a wellness check call." Inside, they "observed an unresponsive female with signs of trauma." Medics pronounced her dead at the scene, and homicide detectives took over the investigation. Police released her name the next day. A later appeal from Metro Crime Stoppers of Maryland placed the attack between 10 and 11 a.m. that day at 5019 Belair Road and described her as having been "shot and killed," a description that differs from the Sun's database, which lists blunt force as the cause. The record does not explain the difference.

Her obituary, posted by the Beverly D. Cromartie Funeral Service, gives her dates as December 19, 1991, to May 24, 2023. A graveside service was held on Saturday, June 3, 2023, at King Memorial Park in Baltimore County.

Seven months after her death, her mother came looking for answers at the city's annual Vigil of Remembrance outside City Hall on January 3, 2024. WYPR reported that Nicole Williams "went looking for closure" there. "She was only 31, a mother, a daughter, and we love her and miss her so much," Williams said through tears. WYPR reported that Williams is raising her daughter's two children, that "the perpetrator has not yet been caught," and that Williams said the Baltimore Police Department had been helpful but that it was hard to go so long without justice. Williams told the station she believes it was likely someone who knew her daughter. The AFRO and PennLive published a photograph from the same vigil of one of Deniton's young children holding a candle for her mother.

Belair Road is one of the main arteries of Northeast Baltimore, carrying U.S. Route 1 from the edge of downtown out toward the Baltimore County line. Its northern stretches are lined with modest homes, apartments, small shops and auto businesses, and the area falls within the police department's Northeast District.

Homicides in Baltimore began falling steeply in 2023 and 2024, reaching the lowest totals in decades, yet many killings from those years remain unsolved.

No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of Shawnika Deniton could be found in news archives or public records. More than three years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible. Her mother's belief that the killer knew her suggests that someone in her circle may hold the answer. Anyone who visited the 5000 block of Belair Road on May 24, 2023, or who knew of trouble in Shawnika Deniton's life that spring, may be able to help her children get answers. Even a small detail, such as a name overheard, a vehicle seen nearby or a conversation remembered, can help detectives move a case forward.
