Mykia Dyer, a 29-year-old Black female, was a vibrant hairstylist known for her talent and infectious personality. On January 23, 2018, her life was tragically cut short in a brazen daylight shooting in Baltimore, Maryland. Mykia had driven to the 1300 block of Division Street in the Upton neighborhood to pick up her 34-year-old husband, Sean Dyer.
After Sean went into a house to change and returned to the car, an unknown assailant ambushed the couple, opening fire and striking them both.
The gunshots rang out around 12:50 p.m., and police officers in the vicinity who heard the shots quickly responded to the scene. They discovered Mykia and Sean inside their vehicle, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency services transported the couple to a nearby hospital, but their injuries proved to be fatal, and they were pronounced dead upon arrival. The double homicide stunned the community and occurred just over a week before a planned city-wide ceasefire event aimed at curbing the very violence that claimed their lives.
Friends and family remembered Mykia as a fun-loving individual with a passion for travel who brought laughter to those around her. Her clients and colleagues at the salon where she worked mourned the loss of the woman they affectionately called the 'hair genius'. In the wake of the shooting, community members and activists held vigils, calling for an end to the violence plaguing the city.
Despite the ongoing efforts of the Baltimore Police Department's homicide detectives, no arrests have been made in connection with the murders of Mykia and Sean Dyer. The case remains open, and authorities have continued to appeal to the public for any information that could lead to the identification and apprehension of the person or persons responsible for their deaths.
