On a tragic day in June of 2020, the lives of 23-year-old Shiand Miller, a female from Baltimore, Maryland, and her young daughter were cut short. Miller, who was eight months pregnant with a baby boy, was found deceased in her car alongside her three-year-old daughter, Shaniya Gilmore. Both had been shot. The discovery was made in the 200 block of Boswell Road in Southwest Baltimore, sending a shockwave of grief and horror through the community.
Family members remembered Miller as someone who aspired to be a hairstylist and described her daughter as a playful child with a constant smile.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly led authorities to a suspect. Devon Sample, who was 24 years old at the time, was identified as Miller's boyfriend and the father of her unborn child. He was taken into custody shortly after the bodies were discovered. According to family members, there had been arguments between Miller and Sample leading up to the tragic event. Investigators were able to recover video footage from a nearby home that captured crucial moments of the incident, including what appeared to be muzzle flashes from inside and at the driver's side of Miller's car.
Devon Sample was subsequently charged with a multitude of offenses, including three counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Shiand Miller, Shaniya Gilmore, and their unborn child. He was also charged with the use of a firearm in a crime of violence and a crime of violence against a pregnant woman. Following his arrest, Sample was held without bail.
In August 2023, a jury found Devon Sample guilty on all counts. He was sentenced to three consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole, in addition to another 70 years of incarceration. The conviction brought a measure of justice to the family for the devastating loss of three lives.
