In the warm evening of Labor Day, September 2, 2019, the life of 17-year-old Bailey Reeves was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire in Baltimore, Maryland. A Black transgender female, Bailey was attending a cookout with friends in the 4300 block of Parkwood Avenue when the shooting occurred at approximately 8:05 p.m.
Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots, followed by the frantic screams of a friend calling for help.
When the chaos subsided, Bailey was found lying in the street, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds to her torso. She was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, but tragically, she succumbed to her injuries. Her brother, who had been at the same party but left about an hour before the shooting, was eating dinner when he received the devastating call to come to the hospital.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Baltimore police began an investigation, canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses and evidence. They confirmed that several individuals were seen running from the area after the shots were fired. Despite their efforts, authorities reported that they had not identified any suspects and had no clear motive for the shooting. One detective suggested that Bailey may not have been the intended target, as the shots were fired from more than half a block away.
As of late 2019, the Baltimore Police Department was offering a $4,000 reward for information that could lead to an arrest and charges in the case. There have been no subsequent reports of any arrests, suspects identified, or convictions in the death of Bailey Reeves, and her case is believed to remain unsolved.
