In the summer of 2018, the life of a 30-year-old Black / African American woman named Kataya Nelson was tragically cut short in Baltimore, Maryland. On the evening of June 11th, at approximately 10:50 p.m., her unresponsive body was discovered in the 100 block of North Fremont Avenue. She had been fatally shot. A resident of the 2700 block of Ellicott Drive, Nelson was a mother to four children and was reportedly pregnant at the time of her death.
Her death was part of a disturbing
string of homicides involving women in Baltimore within a short period. In a span of just 13 hours, three women, including Nelson, were found killed in what police described as targeted attacks. Despite the proximity in timing, authorities stated they did not believe the murders were connected. Two red, heart-shaped balloons and a teddy bear were poignantly tied to a light pole near where her body was found, a small memorial in a city grappling with violence.
